Tesla Unveils Cybertruck’s New Off-Road Features, Cybertent Mode, and More

Tesla has revealed a new Cybertruck software update that brings new off-road features to the electric pickup, as well as Cybertent mode and more.

Despite starting deliveries a few months ago, Tesla has yet to fully develop the electric pickup’s software, and it still lacks some important features.

It’s not uncommon for Tesla to ship a new car program with incomplete software and begin delivering additional features after deliveries.

In February, we reported that Tesla had released the first major software update for the Cybertruck. Improved cart handling, charging, and more.

Now, Tesla has announced a new major software update for the Cybertruck, focusing on off-road capabilities:

Tesla introduces two new off-road modes aimed at different terrains:

  • Overland Mode – More consistent handling and better overall traction when riding on rock, gravel, deep snow or sand.
  • Baja Mode – Vehicle balance is improved and the vehicle steers more freely when Stability Assist is set to Minimum.

For the twin-engine version of the Cybertruck, the automaker also adds differential locks for better cross-country ability:

On uneven or slippery terrain, if a wheel has limited or no traction, the Cybertruck can direct torque to the opposite wheel. In Off-Road mode, select from the Differential Lock options in the vehicle status area or in the Off-Road application.

The Cyberbeast, the three-engine version, gets a front differential lock:

Go to Off-Road > Overland mode and enable the Differential Lock feature. The Cyberbeast tri engine has a virtual rear locking differential that always works in ground mode.

In keeping with the update’s off-road theme, Tesla is releasing an off-road driving assistant.

Tesla wrote about the feature:

It’s like cruise control, but for off-road driving. Trail Assist helps maintain a set cruising speed so you can focus on driving. Trail Assist functions as hill climb and descent control and helps prevent wheel spin. Off-Road Mode > Trail Assist

The automaker is also releasing several new “on road” features.

The first of these is called a “slippery surface”. The automaker wrote about it in the release notes:

Better traction control on snowy, icy, wet or slippery roads to evenly distribute traction across all tires. Dynamics > Slippery Surface Dynamics > Engage Rear Differential Lock to Increase Traction (Should only be used temporarily)

Still with on-road features, Tesla says it also improves ride and cargo handling:

Adaptive suspension now more accurately estimates payload and automatically adjusts damping to provide a more comfortable ride and more consistent, sure-footed handling.

Finally, the upcoming software update also comes with the highly anticipated “CyberTent Mode”.

We previously talked about the upcoming mode with the first review of Cybertent.

Tesla confirms that the mode will balance the suspension to automatically maintain a flat surface for the CyberTent. It also keeps the boot lid open to accommodate the tent. Tesla added that “lights, AC and outlets will also stay on if enabled.”

There’s no word on when the update will be released, other than that it’s coming “soon.”
